The survey conducted following the 1999 conflict reveals a Kosovo that is singular demographically, with characteristics similar to earlier European populations. Changes are underway, however, judging from rapidly falling fertility owing to a decline in nuptiality, higher age at marriage, and unacknowledged recourse to abortion, given the exceptionally low prevalence of contraception.
