The Municipality of Pristina’s Directorate of Health jointly with the Main Family Medicine Centre in Prishtina organized a stakeholder roundtable on the occasion of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Week.

The event held at the Main Family Health Center of Pristina discussed the importance of public awareness of the preventive health services available in primary health care.

The discussions stressed the need for HPV vaccination for girls up to 15 years of age and for regular screening for women, which is increasingly provided in several Kosovo’s health centers. The health workers also stressed the need and plans to spread cervical cancer screening and follow up capacities beyond the gynecology health services, making them available throughout the primary health care of Kosovo.

UNFPA has over the years provided substantial support and technical expertise in the establishment of the cervical cancer prevention program in Kosovo. Through joint efforts by the Ministry of Health, the Institute of Pathology, primary health care in Prishtina, Peja, Prizren and Mitrovica municipalities, UNFPA and Action for Mothers and Children,  13,725 Kosovo women have undergone cervical cancer screening in the primary health care system.

Speaking at the event today, UNFPA Head of Office Dr. Visare Mujko-Nimani said that “UNFPA is committed to working with relevant institutions, health workers, and civil society towards protecting and improving the health of women and general population of Kosovo.”
