During February 2015, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) office in Kosovo, through the project “Building a Better Future for Citizens of Fushë Kosovë/Kosovo Polje and Obiliq/Obilić: Participation, Protection and Multi-Ethnic Partnerships for Improved Education, Health and Sustainable Livelihoods”, organised roundtable discussions for issues faced during the civil registration procedures in these two respective municipalities. Participants in these roundtables consisted of municipal representatives, Kosovo Agency of Statistics, Faith Based Organizations, and the civil society, focused on the problems faced during death registration specifically. It was highlighted that the current situation with the registration of deaths in Kosovo, especially in these two municipalities, is quite weak. There are different challenges that both municipalities face, and in order to resolve them, participants agreed to:

  • Consider the possibility of revising and improving the existing agreement between the Municipal Assembly and the Islamic community, which is covering the funeral expenses;
  • Explore the possibility of making such agreements with other religious communities;
  • Inform the population during lectures held by imams in mosques about the importance and procedures of registration of the death as well as about the importance of the presence of family doctors in verification and determination of the cause of death;
  • Establish the working group that will work in compiling information materials for civil registration
