Promoting Family-Friendly Workplace Policies

UNFPA Kosovo, in collaboration with the Women's Economic Forum, hosted a pivotal event at the Swiss Diamond Hotel, bringing together representatives from the public and private sectors, civil society, and international organizations to discuss the transformative potential of family-friendly workplace policies. The event shed light on how these policies can advance gender equality, improve work-life balance, and foster sustainable socio-economic development in Kosovo.

The discussion emphasized that Kosovo continues to face significant challenges, with one of the lowest employment rates for women in the region at only 19.8%. Notably, while nearly half a million women in Kosovo are of working age, only 25% of them are employed. Participants highlighted key barriers, including gender norms, the lack of parental leave policies, insufficient workplace flexibility, and disparities in the enforcement of labor laws. The event provided a platform for proposing inclusive policies such as parental leave models and flexible work arrangements, which are crucial to empowering women in the workforce and ensuring equitable opportunities.

A highlight of the event was the launch of the video "Expanding Choices through Family-Friendly Policies", which powerfully demonstrates the benefits of such policies. By showcasing their ability to support families, empower women, and contribute to societal well-being, the video underlined the urgency of adopting these measures.

One inspiring example shared during the event came from a private company, Art House, which introduced paternity leave for new fathers. This initiative has proven that change is possible and can lead to a more equitable work environment while promoting sustainable development.

Visare Mujko Nimani, Head of UNFPA Kosovo, addressed the audience, emphasizing that family-friendly policies are not merely a luxury but a necessity for addressing gender inequality and achieving sustainable development. She noted that programs like "Expanding Choices", supported by UNFPA and funded by the Austrian Development Agency, play a crucial role in creating inclusive workplaces that benefit employees, families, and society as a whole.

“By empowering both women and men to balance professional and family responsibilities, we are fostering an environment where everyone can thrive,” stated Nimani. “Together, we can rewrite the narrative and build a society where gender equality drives economic progress and strengthens families.”

The event concluded with a strong call to action for government institutions, private sector leaders, and civil society to collaborate on implementing family-friendly policies. These measures aim to increase women’s participation in the labor force, encourage men to take on active caregiving roles, and create a future where families and the economy benefit equally.

About "Expanding Choices"
The "Expanding Choices" program, now in its second phase, focuses on supporting governments in designing and monitoring gender-responsive family policies and encouraging private sector actors to adopt such initiatives. It also promotes regional cooperation and knowledge-sharing on the link between family-friendly policies, gender equality, and economic development.

By advancing these policies, Kosovo can pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable society where every individual has the opportunity to contribute and succeed.
