Marking International Day of Non-Violence in Kosovo

On the occasion of the International Day of Non-Violence, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in collaboration with the SIT - Center for Counseling, Social Services and Research, hosted a remarkable event in Pristina, Kosovo, at Kino Armata.

This event aimed to shed light on the power of transformation, resilience, and breaking the cycle of violence through the screening of the documentary "Beyond the Walls." The documentary, supported by the Correctional Center in Kosovo, presented the personal journey of a brave young individual who overcame the cycle of violence. The event also featured a panel discussion with distinguished speakers and emphasized the importance of education and counseling in addressing violence.

Albulena Haxhiu, Minister of Justice emphasized that traditional stereotypes where men dominate through the exercise of force and violence against women, make toxic masculinity closely related to femicide, in which case our society is not immune to cases where women end their lives fatally, raped and killed by men.

Visare Mujko Nimani, Head of UNFPA Office in Kosovo emphasized UNFPA's dedication to empowering the youth of Kosovo through various programs and initiatives. These efforts provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education, access to services, and opportunities for skill development. UNFPA also engages with young people to ensure their voices are heard in decision-making processes. By investing in the well-being and aspirations of Kosovo's youth, UNFPA not only contributes to their personal growth and development but also discourages youth-based violence. This fosters the idea of the younger generation as agents of positive change, driving progress and equality in society.

Vjollca Krasniqi, PhD shared her expertise and insights into addressing violence, contributing valuable perspectives to the discussion.

Flaka Ymeri, Social Work Officer in the Correctional Center shared practical experiences and the importance of rehabilitation and support within the correctional system.

Moderated by Kadri Gashi, the Executive Director of SIT, the panelists discussed the vital role of education and counseling in breaking the cycle of violence, emphasizing that a multidimensional approach is necessary to create lasting change.

This event was organized within the framework of the "Youth 4 Inclusion, Equality & Trust" project, which is financed by the UN Peacebuilding Fund and implemented by UNFPA Kosovo in cooperation with SIT.
