In an inspiring collaboration between the Special Olympics, UNFPA, and UNDP, a mixed football competition unfolded, uniting youth with intellectual and physical disabilities from various municipalities to mark Poverty Eradication Week. The event, held at the Rilindja football pitch in Tauk Bahçe/Tauk Bašta, Prishtinë/Priština, took place on 23 October, leaving an indelible mark of unity and empowerment.

A total of 112 young participants, accompanied by their families, representing diverse ethnic backgrounds from seven municipalities, came together to play, compete, and forge connections. This remarkable gathering aimed to bolster social cohesion, inclusivity, trust, and the empowerment of young individuals with disabilities. The initiative further promotes a healthy lifestyle among young people and actively combats hate speech and negative gender norms. By bringing youth, families, and local communities together, this inspiring event sought to challenge and transform divisive and discriminatory attitudes towards the most vulnerable in our society.

Arnhild Spence, UN Development Coordinator, and Igballe Potera, President of Special Olympics, warmly welcomed the participants and emphasized the significance of such initiatives in upholding the principles of inclusion and 'leave no one behind.'

While the spirited tournament unfolded on the field, family members engaged in discussions about the challenges, obstacles, and opportunities faced by these young individuals in their daily lives. The resounding consensus was that greater efforts must be made to actively involve youth and their families in all aspects of life.

Visare Mujko Nimani, Head of UNFPA,Nuno Queirós, UNDP Resident Representative, and Marta K. Gazideda, UNDP Governance and Peacebuilding Portfolio Manager, had the honor of awarding trophies to the triumphant teams. In a gesture of recognition and appreciation, all 112 young women and men received medals for their outstanding participation and unwavering commitment.

This event was a significant contribution to Poverty Eradication Week, spreading the powerful message of "Dignity for All in Practice." It was part of the larger regional joint UN initiative 'Youth 4 Inclusion Equality & Trust,' generously supported by the UN Secretary-General's Peacebuilding Fund. This heartfelt gathering stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of unity, empathy, and collective progress.
