Inspired by our collective efforts to combat gender-based violence and discrimination under the framework of 16 Days of Activism, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with UNFPA, put together a groundbreaking conference in Prishtina. Titled "Gender Preferences and Selective Abortion - Gender Discrimination and Harmful Practices Against Girls," the conference brought together key voices dedicated to addressing this critical issue.
Underscoring the event was a powerful video message from the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, echoing a strong stance against gender preferences and selective abortions. An eminent panel featuring Albulena Haxhiu Minister of Justice, Arben Vitia Minister of Health, Arberie Nagavci Minister of Education, Avni Kastrati Statistics Agency of Kosovo, Visare Mujko-Nimani UNFPA, outlined the different aspects of the issue and what is being done in response.
The panel explored the multifaceted aspects of gender preferences and selective abortion—examining statistics, legal implications, healthcare perspectives, and the societal impact. Moderated by Naile Dema Selmani, the discussion was a significant step towards fostering awareness and driving positive change.
It is imperative that we continue working together to eliminate gender discrimination and create a society where every individual is valued, regardless of gender.
